Competition to illuminate the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

The City Council of Santiago de Compostela has announced the launch of an international competition to design the ornamental and artistic lighting of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and its monumental surroundings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the culmination of the renowned Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.

This pioneering initiative, part of the city’s Tourism Sustainability Plan, places a strong emphasis on sustainability, heritage preservation, and the global projection of creative talent. The goal is to redesign the nighttime landscape of this iconic setting with an approach that is fully integrated into the historic environment.

Light Collective are supporting the team behind the competition. Our role is to promote the opportunity to the global lighting design community.

The competition is in two stages with six finalists being given a grant of €18,150 to develop their design before one winner is chosen by the jury and then invited to negotiate a contract to deliver the final project and oversee implementation of the lighting scheme in Praterías Square. The contract is valued at €121,000. Submissions will be judged on their creativity, technical quality, energy efficiency innovation, and economic feasibility.

The deadline for submission of conceptual proposals is 19 August 2025 at 23:59 (local time).

The competition is open to professionals worldwide – individuals or interdisciplinary teams – bringing together expertise in heritage architecture, urban planning and lighting design.

Below is a link to a website with competition details, a huge wealth of historical and architectural information about the building and its surroundings and access to all the rules and tender information.

We hope that you will consider entering this prestigious competition.
